Samuel Cheetham and his wife, Ann Hartley, died of typhus within a short time of each other at the end of October 1862. It appears that their 8-year old son William Edward may have also died of this. The six surviving children were orphaned. However, while Mary Ann died three years later at the age of ten, the other five survived to have families of their own. In 1871 the children remained at 70 Cheetham Street with their Aunt, Betsy Hartley caring for them and with the profession of pawnbroker (as was Samuel before his death). My particular interest here, apart from Eliza Ann, whom I personally descend from, was Arthur Bright Cheetham's daughter Charlotte Collier. When she died in Blackburn, intestate, in the 1980s, I was contacted, along with other living descendants of Samuel Cheetham and Ann Hartley, by an heir-hunter. Eventually, my share of her estate turned out to be under £100. However, it was this event, and the outline genealogy on which the above is based, which I later obtained from the heir-hunter, that started me on my genealogical quest (thirty years and still ongoing!). |
